South West France
Summary
A non-contiguous region located south east of Bordeaux. Influenced by the Atlantic ocean with a moderate maritime climate. Inland appellations are drier and warmer. Large volumes of wine are made at both the PDO and PGI levels. Some areas are located along the Dordogne River, with Bordeaux-style wines reflecting similar grapes and winemaking focus, although at a more value price point. Southern areas are influenced by the Pyrenees Mountain range and warm Föhn winds, and showcase unique wines from indigenous grape varieties. The IGP Côtes de Gascogne has found much success with early drinking inexpensive white wines on export markets.
