Roussillon
Summary
Once administratively bound with the Languedoc, this area is now a region unto itself, with many sites located on slopes within the Pyrenees foothills. Warm, windy and low rainfall conditions contribute to slow ripening grapes. There are no flat plains suited for bulk production here, with 70% of vineyards classified as AOC production. Cooperatives, however, dominate accounting for 75% of total production volumes. Majority of wines are red, with some rosé and white production. Vin Doux Naturel fortified wines are also important to this area accounting for ¼ of total production.
