This area has a long history of viticulture stemming from 600BC. As a result of its cultural heritage, there are many grape varieties championed within this area. The climate is broadly Mediterranean, moderated by the cold Mistral northern wind and altitude. Rosé production accounts for 90% of AOC wine. The famous blended pale pink style is now duplicated across the world. A burgeoning tourism industry has led to the decline of vineyards in the area due to the expansion of hotels and other housing developments. 65% of total production is consumed in France. Négociants and cooperatives are important within this region.
