Northern Rhône
Summary
This northern French sub-zone experiences a moderate continental climate. Strong northern mistral winds affect exposed vines by reducing fungal diseases, but also vigour and yield. Vineyard sites are generally located on steep slopes above the Rhône River providing some wind protection. Aspects are determined by the course of the river. The area under vine is vastly lower than its southern counterpart. Clearly defined AOC areas are known as Cru, and the total area from north to south is only 65 kms. Concrete tank fermentations are common here.
