Brunello di Montalcino DOCG

Summary

This DOCG is located in southern Tuscany and is famous for its bold, full bodied wines made from 100% Sangiovese. With warmer and drier conditions than Chianti Classico DOCG, moderating influences come from cool Mediterranean winds, retaining acidity in fruit. An overall hilly topography with varied elevations, producers often blend numerous sites in search of aromatic and structural nuances. Extended ageing is required with 5 years and 2 years in oak before release. Single vineyard sites may appear on labels, but this area is without official sub-zones. In poor years, or with wines made from young vines, producers may declassify to Rosso DOC, offering wines with short term ageing, approachable structure, and more affordable pricing.
