Collective department featuring the Côte de Nuits in the north, and Côte de Beaune in the south. The climate is moderate continental with threats of spring frost and hail contributing to vintage variation. The classification of this area is based on vineyard location and slope, reflecting the quality potential of wines from land which drains well and enjoys greater sun exposure. Grand Cru sites are found midslope (1% of total production), Premier Cru sites surround Grand Cru areas, Village or Communal vineyards are found on the lowest parts of the slope, with generic Bourgogne AOC (52% of total production) coming from the flat lands at the bottom of slopes.
