Australia

Summary

Country with a reputation for innovation and experimentation across its wine industry. Home to some of the oldest ungrafted Grenache and Syrah vines, as phylloxera was largely avoided through strict quarantine measures. With a broadly dry and warm climate, forest-fires and drought conditions are common. Wine exports have been largely successful through modern advertising, and approachable wine styles. The financial crisis of 2008 and never-ending drought conditions have since shifted the reliance of large-scale production towards style diversification, conservation and premiumisation, helping to maintain its strong global export standings. Geographical indications are split into zones, regions and smaller sub-regions.
