Summary
Important and varied wine region located in the western Loire Valley The climate is relatively mild, being influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, yet protected by the Vendée Forest. The best exposed sites are generally used for still wines, as grapes require a higher degree of ripeness. The Layon River and its tributaries provide misty conditions suitable for botrytis-affected grapes and sweet wine production. Schist and Limestone soils are common, providing water retention and drainage.
