Summary
This region in North East Italy is also known as Südtirol. The entire area sits in the Dolomite foothills and has a mildly alpine continental climate, with warm air currents and upwards of 300 days of sun per year. This region has high diurnal ranges and many soil types such as volcanic porphyry, quartz, mica, and dolomitic limestone providing flavour nuances and acid retention in fruit. Vineyard holdings are very small, with 70% of production coming from quality focused cooperatives. 75% of wines are sold domestically, with exports increasing. 98% of the wines from this area fall within the DOC. There is currently no DOCG.
