How to Use Envision
Help for new users

Some tips and tricks to help you get the most out of the site.

At the heart of Envision.wine is content created by our team during their own learning and certification studies. This content will continue to grow over time as the team adds more description, laws, and notes. We cover three major areas:

  • Regions - The places and people that help create a style of wine. Most of our content focused on those regions producing still, non-fortified wine, but this will evolve as we add more content.
  • Varietals - The grapes at the heart of different styles of wine
  • Wines - The combination of people, place, varietals, process, and business decisions that create a finished product for consumption. Most of our wines tasting notes are for still, non-fortified wines but this will continue to evolve.

You can browse any of this content using the links above, or search for it. In addition to written content and visualizations, Envision.wine has videos covering many of the most important wines and styles.

Once you are logged into the site, most pages will have a search bar at the top. When searching for a topic, for example barolo, you will see results tagged with region, wines or varietals to help clarify when results might overlap.

Just choose from the selections using your mouse, keyboard, or finger to navigate to that page.

Favorite/Study List

When viewing any of the content pages, you will see an empty star next to the page's Summary (a quick overview of the details of that region, varietal or wine). Clicking that star will add it to your favorite/study list and the star will appear filled. Clicking it again will remove that content from your study list.

Study Center

Any content you mark in this way will be saved to your own personal study list. This will allow you to quickly revisit it and organize your own studies. The lists of all the content you mark appear in in the Study Center broken down by Regions, Wines, Varietals.

Clicking on any of those links will return you to the original content. Adding content to your list also helps focus some of Envision's other features on your needs.

The study center also offers access to a number of other tools to help with learning. Most importantly, Learn Mode.

Learn Mode

Learn Mode quizzes you on Regions, Wines and Varietals along a number of dimensions including identifying regions by their summary, identifying wines by their structural elements, relative comparison of those structural elements, and the varietals used in specific wines (along with their regional synonyms).

After you select an answer, you are provided an explanation for each item and links to review any of the answers and add the relevant content to your study list if you choose.

Learn mode can be a very useful study or quizzing tool and it will keep track of your progress over time.

Report Issues/Errors

All content and learn pages of Envision.wine have a Report Errors/Issues button in the lower left corner of the page. Wine information is constantly changing and, while our team tries to stay current with university research and proofread all content, small issues and outdated information will happen from time to time. If you find an issue with Envision.wine, please use this button to report it to the team.

Unfortunately, the Internet is filled with incorrect and outdated information as well. Therefore, when reporting an issue, you will be asked to provide an authoritative source for the correction. This will allow the team to investigate and determine the best course of action to provide members with accurate information. Members who are particularly engaged and help us find a significant number of issues, will be eligible for discounts.

Experiments

Envision.wine is always trying new ideas, so we also have 2 experimental tools, Structure Search and Structure Comparison.

Structure Search

Structure Search allows you to search our wine tasting notes by specifying ranges for the structural elements and Envision provides a list of matching wines. It can be an interesting way to test yourself and check your observations against our notes when you are actively tasing alone or with a group.

Structure Comparison

Structure Comparison allows you to visualize the structural components of any our tasting notes on a single graph. We use it to help understand the structural relationship between different wines and can really help in refining your ability to identify candidate wines when blind tasting.

Envision.wine is constantly evolving. We are adding new visualizations and new tools to help get to the core elements of a region, varietal and wine.
